Howrah Bridge

Howrah Bridge is an engineering marvel, which was built in the 1940s. It is now so much part of the city, that Calcutta would be inconceivable without it. The huge cantilever bridge strung on two 196 feet high pillars connects Calcutta with Howrah and is used by hundreds of vehicles daily.

Victoria Memorial

Victoria Memorial was built in 1912 with the white marble, in memory of Queen Victoria, and is one of Calcutta's most beautiful monumental legacies from the Raj. The Prince of Wales inaugurated it. With beautiful garden around, the monument houses a large bronze statue of the Queen Empress, besides paintings, Manu- scripts and other objects of historic values in its Museum and Art Gallery.

Zoological Gardens

The oldest and biggest zoo in India is Calcutta's one of the main places of interest. The Prince of Wales opened it on January 1st 1876. The huge 16-hectare grounds houses a wide species of animals & birds including the rare white Bengal Tigers

Indian Museum

The museum, which was built in 1875, stands as the largest in India today. The mummy is a special attraction for the visitors. It houses rare antiques, ornaments, an amour, fossils, stones, paintings of Mughal India, animal skeleton, mummies etc.

National Library

One of the largest libraries in the country, National Library houses a collection of more than one million books. It also has the rarest collection of very rare manuscripts, which is of very high historical value.

Vidyasagar Setu

Vidyasagar Setu or commonly referred to as Second Howrah bridge is a modern engineering marvel with the largest cable used in any bridge of Asia. It was inaugurated in 1992 and is the second bridge connecting the twin cities of Calcutta and Howrah.

Eden Gardens

Eden Gardens was built in 1840.This stadium can accommodate 1 lakh spectators. An artificial lake adjacent to it also attracts tourists. The beautiful Burmese-Style pagoda, which was brought from Burma after the British victory in the Burmese, was of 1884 adds more attraction to this picnic spot.

The Birla Planetarium

One of the largest in Asia, near to Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium can take you to the astronautical tour with the help of a gigantic planetarium projector accessories comprising of 29,000 parts. This combines to portray on the inner ceiling of the planetarium. Stars, planets and heavenly bodies come into view as the background lecture explains and guides.

Rabindra Sadan / Nandan

Situated on the southeast corner of the maiden, Rabindra Sadan and Nandan is cultural centre for film enthusiasts and professional. Largely patronized by the Late Satyajit Ray, who inaugurated Nandan, it has three motion picture theatres with the best screening facilities.

The Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden is Asia's largest and second largest garden in the world with 273 acres of area. Comprising of lawns and woods, on the western bank of Hoogly, it was founded in 1787 by Col. Alexander Kyd of the East India Company. There are more than 30,000 varieties of trees and plants, including the famous banyan tree. This 200-year-old Banyan tree, the world's largest, has a circumference of 330m. The 600 roots from the tree reach for the ground in low, sinewy, twisting lengths.

Metro Railway

India's first and only underground Railway system, Metro is the crown of the City. It connects Tollygunge, the southern end of the city to Dumdum, the northern end of the city. It covers 16 km distance divided into 17 Stations with only 33 minutes. Plans to extend this system to the suburbs are going on.

Shaheed Minar

This 165 Ft. High monument was erected with public subscription in 1828. More recently, it has been named "Shaheed Minar" to honor the martyrs of the freedom struggle. An important landmark in Calcutta, it is located at the Northern end of the Maiden.

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum

Birla Industrial and Technological Museum is a Place for students, who are interested in practically experiencing their scientific knowledge. Located between the crossing of Syed Amir Ali Avenue and Gurusaday road, it showcases basic science and technology. It has a large number of exhibits, designed, prepared and fabricated at its own workshop.

Nalban

Situated at Salt Lake City, adjacent to Nicco Park, Nalban is a beautiful picnic spot for families who want to spend few hours in the quiet greenery, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.

Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir is the largest addition to the places of visit in Calcutta and is built over twenty-two years of painstaking labor. It is an all-marble structure with very high quality Rajasthani engravings.

Kalighat Temple

Great attraction for Hindu Pilgrims, the temple is located at Kalighat in South Calcutta.

Belur Math

Founded by Swami Vivekanand, the famous yogi and disciple of Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa, it is the Headquarters of the Ramkrishna Math and Mission. The hall with the statue of Ramkrishna Paramhansa, is the main prayer hall. It is located at Belur, Howrah.

Nicco park (Jheel Meel)

Situated at Salt Lake, Nicco Park is the Disneyland of West Bengal, with a variety of unusual games and rides.

St. Paul's Cathedral

This Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta was built in 1847, adjacent to the Birla Planetarium. It towers 65m high.

Calcutta Race Course

Built in 1820s, Calcutta Race Course is one of the largest race courses in the country. The most important races hosted here are Queen Elizabeth Cup & the Calcutta Derby.

B.B.D. Bag

Dalhousie Square, the seat of administration of British India, has been renamed after Three Martyrs of Bengal Binoy, Badal & Dinesh. On the Southern side of the square is the Raj Bhavan, built in Georgian style of architecture. Close by, is the Assembly House, a unique specimen of Gothic architecture and St. John's Church, the oldest church in Calcutta where lies mausoleum of Job Charnok, the founder of the city. The Writer's building, Grandiose Gothic architecture and the hub of governmental affairs occupy the entire north.

High Court

Built by Walter Granville in 1872 in Gothic Style, Kolkata High Court is one of the oldest courts in India and is the landmark of Calcutta. The court also has a tower, which stands 60 meters tall.

New Market

New Market is one of Calcutta's best and renowned shopping centers built in 1874 by Sir Stuart Hogg. Its red brick Gothic click tower bears testimony to past grandeur. Linen to cakes, fruit to fish, all & sundry is available in wide choice & price.

General Post Office (GPO)

The GPO is a building of architectural interest at B.B.D.Bag Area. This is the main Post office of Calcutta, which controls the entire postal system of Calcutta.

Rabindra Sarobar

The beautiful lakes and greenery has been developed to give Calcutta a lovely picnic option. The palm trees along the banks add to the beauty of the place. A public swimming pool and a Japanese Buddhist temple are almost the other attractions by the lakeside.

Writer's Building

Situated at the northern end of Dalhousie Square, Writers Building was built in 1880s by Britishers. It now houses the Secretariat of the West Bengal Government.

Science City
